‘Bongi Ntuli will be remembered among SA’s best forwards’

The memorial service of the late AmaZulu FC striker Bonginkosi Ntuli was held at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, Durban, on Wednesday afternoon.

Ntuli sadly passed away on Sunday afternoon at the Midlands Medical Centre Private Hospital in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, after battling a recently diagnosed aggressive form of cancer.

“It is with a very heavy heart that we inform you of the untimely passing of our beloved centre-forward and loyal servant, Bonginkosi Ntuli,” the club said in a statement on Sunday.

“Ntuli was [recently] diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer, which metastasised and ultimately led to his death at the Midlands Medical Centre Private Hospital in Pietermaritzburg.

“May his beautiful soul rest in eternal peace.”

The sudden passing of Ntuli comes just two months after he tied the knot with Sinenjabulo Zungu, the daughter of club CEO Sandile Zungu, in September.

Tributes from local football clubs, coaches and fellow players have been pouring in since the news of his passing broke.

Rest in peace Bafo

Said TS Galaxy forward Bernard Parker: “Deepest condolences to the Ntuli, Zungu family and AmaZulu Football, Rest in Peace Bafo.”

Safa said: “We as the South African Football Association would like to convey our sincerest condolences, deepest sympathy and heartfelt sorrow to his family, friends and the club during this difficult time.”

“Really sad news. Bongi joined us [on loan] at AmaZulu in January 2015 and turned our season around that year,” said Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker.

“One the best forwards I’ve worked with. Such an amazing person on and off the field. My sincere condolences to Bongi’s family, the Zungu family and the entire AmaZulu family.”

The Premier Soccer League has since confirmed that there would be a moment of silence in all games this week.

Ntuli made 142 appearances for AmaZulu, including six this season. He also featured for Mamelodi Sundowns, Cape Umoya and Golden Arrows.
