BOSA calls on Mashatile to pay bills of victims beaten by police

The Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s (GPL) Portfolio Committee on Community Safety on Tuesday strongly condemned the violent behavior of the police officers who were seen beating up motorists on N1 and made a call for action against those found guilty.

Committee Chairperson Bandile Masuku said: “We welcome the initiative by SAPS management to further investigate the matter. We also call on the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) to conduct its own investigation and bring to book those found in transgression of the SAPS code of conduct in this regard.

“There is no gainsaying that SAPS officers should always maintain the highest standard of integrity and conduct themselves in a professional manner – striving to serve the public with dignity. This is important as a driver of public trust and confidence in the work of SAPS.”

The Committee vowed to keep a close eye on the incident to ensure that appropriate action is taken where SAPS officers are found to be on the wrong side of the law.

Build One South Africa (BOSA), led by Mmusi Maimane, also strongly condemned the incident and called for Paul Mashatile to pay the victims medical bills.

BOSA’s national spokesperson Paul Su Zondi said: “This is an indictment on the very ethos of servant leadership in government. Too often citizens are seen and treated as the enemy, and this jarring incident illustrates the total disconnect between this ANC government and the people of South Africa.”

Zondi further alarmed concerns about the victims medical conditions and called on Deputy President Mashatile to personally pay for the medical expenses of those injured by his VIP protection team and to make a full apology to the victims and the country.

He said: “As Deputy President, Paul Mashatile needs to take responsibility for the actions of those who protect him. Unfortunately, his official response is no worse than President Ramaphosa throwing Wally Rhoode under the bus and washing his hands of the actions of those who act in his name. Like Ramaphosa, he must take responsibility for the actions of his security team.”
