A one-year-old child died on Friday after falling into a trash can that contained water at Xigalo village in Vhembe district, Limpopo.
According to police, preliminary investigations have revealed that the deceased’s brother arrived home on Friday afternoon, while the mother was occupied with other duties.
“After a few minutes, the mother and other family members noticed that the toddler was nowhere to be found,” said police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba.
“They looked around and found the victim inside the dustbin that was full of water and pulled her outside while showing no signs of life.”
He went on to explain that the cops received a complaint about a toddler falling in a trash bin containing water and rushed to the scene.
When police arrived, they discovered the lifeless body of a one-year-and-eight-month-old baby girl on the floor inside the house, according to Ledwaba.
Declared dead on the scene
Emergency Medical Services workers were dispatched to the scene, where they declared the baby dead.
Ledwaba stated that the Malamulele police are investigating an inquest into a toddler’s tragic demise.
Meanwhile, police in KwaZulu-Natal are investigating the rape of a two-year-old child. The child was allegedly raped while attending daycare.
The mother of the victim told the police while she attended an anti-crime meeting in Newlands near Durban recently.
A specialised team from the family violence, child protection, and sexual offences unit would look into the case, according to provincial police commissioner General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
“Though I do not have the details of the case, I was informed of an incident that happened in Newlands that involved a minor,” said Mkhwanazi.
“I also have a child that goes to creche, so I wouldn’t want to be in that position where my child comes back being molested.
“I am sure we will be getting direct answers as to what we do with this matter going forward. We appreciate the community that is active in fighting crime.”
