Child seen in viral assault video removed from mom’s care

After a video went viral of a woman seen kicking her child, police have confirmed that a case of assault was opened against her and that she has been released after appearing in court on Monday.

The child has been removed from her care and handed over to the Department of Social Development (DSD) for placement.

Police said the woman believed to be Nthabiseng Nhlapo is the biological mother of the child and allegedly made the video to get back at the father of the child.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo revealed that the father of the toddler brought the matter to the attention of the Norwood Police Station. The matter was immediately transferred to the Family Violence, Child Protection, Sexual Investigations (FCS) Unit.

“The mother appeared before the Johannesburg Magistrate Court on Monday and was released and the matter was not placed on the court roll as the SAPS was instructed to first collect both cellphones of both parents for further investigation,” added Mavela.

The police has already begun processing the cellphones.
