Gauteng health and wellness MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko confirmed on Wednesday that the department is working on plans to build a 300-bed Kempton Park District Hospital.
Nkomo-Ralehoko disclosed the information when responding to questions in the legislature about the old Kempton Park hospital, which was shut over two decades ago due to reprioritisation and streamlining of services.
Although communities near the old facility continue to receive services at primary healthcare facilities within the vicinity, there is a need for a higher-care facility, as the population is rapidly growing.
The MEC indicated that the department has engaged the Gauteng Infrastructure Funding Agency to assist with funding proposals for the demolition of the old facility and the construction of the new hospital.
“There are no time frames and budget as yet, as the proposal is still under consideration,” said Nkomo-Ralehoko.
