People rushed out all over the city to stock up on groceries and other essentials on Tuesday ahead of the lockdown.
Many experts have relayed that they understand people’s fears, as many are panicking because they don’t know what will be allowed during lockdown.
But one of the busiest retailers, Pick n Pay has reassured South Africans that there will be enough food and they will remain open.
Group CEO, Richard Brasher, said they have increased levels of hygiene in their stores over recent weeks.
“We have a good supply chain; we have great suppliers and farmers. We will be giving everything we can to give you a great service. Some of you will be worried, and some of you will have a temptation to buy more than you actually need. But we will endeavour to be open and we endeavour to fill our shelves every night and every day for the foreseeable future. We may not always have exactly the range that you anticipatedthat we wouldv’e had in more peaceful time. But we will be stocking the basics of what we require and we’re grateful for the fact that we can serve you your daily bread,” he said.
Brasher asked that customers be tolerant of each other, practice social distancing and to be mindful of frontline staff who also have fears.
“Be sensitive to them. Our priority is to feed you. We look forward to the challenge and along with you we can make this work. I look forward to happier times.”
