Professor Mlungiseleli Jadezweni, who had been a major force behind the nation’s education transformation, has died.
Jadezweni left the education system after more than 25 years of serving.
He worked as chairperson of the Eastern Cape Education Advisory Council (ECEAC) and rector at Walter Sisulu University (WSU), formerly known as Border Technikon, Eastern Cape Technikon, and the University of Transkei.
An education activist
Jadezweni was elected as the ECEAC Chairperson in 2009, according to Fundile Gade, the MEC for Education. This was because of his extensive experience and enthusiasm for education.
“He served with distinction in this position of a chairperson from 2009 until his passing,” said Gade. He added that the sector will miss Prof Jadezweni’s subtle and robust contribution in driving the transformation of education across the country.
“Prof, Jadezweni, also served as the chairperson of the Provincial Quality Teaching and Learning Campaign since the launch of the QTLC in 2012,” he added.
Gade said the department will cherish the contribution made by Jadezweni.
“The sector extends its sincere condolences to his wife and the entire Jadezweni family and friends. We hope they find solace and strength from the Almighty, during this difficult time of their lives. We shall forever cherish the contribution of this gallant activist to the end” said Gade.
According to reports, Professor Jadezweni passed on last Saturday and the funeral arrangements will be communicated soon.
Education, career and background
Jadezweni entrenched himself in the education sector from when he started from secondary education to higher education.
Over the years he held various positions within the field, which allowed him to lecture and supervise students.
Throughout his career he has worked from the University of Transkei and Columbia University of New York.
In 2018, professor Jadezweni was placed on precautionary suspension by WSU. The then WSU vice-chancellor Rob Midgley hinted at allegations of maladministration.
