EFF wants justice for young man who ‘designed’ Moses Mabhida

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF)) is seeking justice for the late Sbusiso Nene. He died in 2009 after a short illness.

In 2004, Sbusiso made a startling claim when he alleged that he designed the iconic Moses Mabhida stadium. He was in Grade 11 at the time.

Now the EFF has vowed to get justice for Nene.

Vowed to get justice for Nene

EFF member of parliament and party KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson, Brian Blose, has since written to the Minister of Sports Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, asking whether he has been informed about Nene’s role in the design of the Moses Mabhida Stadium. And also that he died without being credited for the design.

Blose also wanted to know if the department has made any progress on the investigation into the matter. And if there are any commitments made to rectify the situation and acknowledge Nene’s contribution.

In his response, the minister indicated that he has no knowledge of this.

“I have not been informed about Mr. Sibusiso Nene’s role in the design of the Moses Mabhida Stadium,” said MacKenzie.

He said that his department was not responsible for the job, but eThekwini Municipality was.

Minister MacKenzie denies his department’s liability

“The implementation model that was employed in the planning and construction of Moses Mabhida Stadium was that the National Treasury made budget available. And the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture was a transferring officer.

“The eThekwini Municipality was the implementing agent (contracting party). In other words, all appointments of project planners, architects, engineers and contractors, etc. All were managed by eThekwini Municipality. In their capacity as an implementing agent (contracting party).

“Considering this, and with all due respect, contracting-related queries or concerns are better directed to the implementing agent,” he said.

Blose told Sunday World that the minister’s response shows disregard for Nene’s family.

“The fact that he doesn’t know about this matter shows that he has no interest in it. He’s showing total disregard for the family and Nene’s intellectual property,” said Blose.

Intellectual property matter

“Here, we’re dealing with an intellectual property matter. The crux of the matter is that Moses Mabhida was designed by [Nene]. And he must be compensated for that. Unfortunately, he’s no more, but all the evidence is there. Now we want justice for [Nene’s] family,” he said.

“Our next step is to write to eThekwini Municipality and get clarity. After that, we’ll be consulting with our legal team to plan our next move,” said Blose.

  1. EFF are clutching at populist straws ! In this vain process , they are hoping to trip up one of the few ministers who is worth his Salary !! These people are Oxygen – Thieves , with the “Race Card” firmly behind their back !

  2. So what about fnb ,orlando, cape town, mbombela, Nelson Mandela and Peter Mokaba stadium. Who are the designers and how much were they paid. I don’t remember a designer/ architect competition run for this stadium erection

  3. What is wrong with this misfit of a political party.Go make a late application for for participation and make yourself useful.Since the inception of your party you are acting scandalous and like thugs in all spheres of government whether you in parliament,in court rooms,in the public.Wherever you are you are not a pleasure when interacting with others.

  4. Fools from a dying party. Again taking up issues to improve its decay instead of serving the people who voted for you. Racists and populists run by a one man commander of nothing.

  5. They need to probe and prove this….and if indeed the late Sbuda is proved to be the design, then he need to be credited and compensated.

  6. The guy came forward, if designers of other stadiums did not come forward how did the EFF should know. They want justice for the person who came forward. Stop being clever

  7. Shame on those who have a problem with EFF posture in fighting for the marginalized poor Nene family simply because of your hate for EFF. What this party is doing is standing with this poor family and that is noble.

  8. Ok, so wherever someone has conceptualized, designed, written, created or built anything, they should be credited for it. EFF is right in saying this, but their execution in this matter may be a bit haphazard. They need to reassess & strategize properly if they hope to succeed (provided that the end game is helping the family & not a self serving exercise).

Also the comment about DSAC is ignorant. The Dept is not disregarding anyone by making a true & accurate statement about their involvement in the stadium building. No person/organization should deliberately take on responsibility for something they had NO control over. Through proper engagement however, where the right people have taken accountability and a course of action is decided, invite DSAC back to the table as a contributor to the redress. This becomes a full circle action and EFF will be credited with the coordination as well as restoring the dignity of a young citizen. Making noise purely to sling mud at other politicians is juvenile.

  9. We commend the EFF for advocating on behalf of Sbusiso Nene’s legacy. Recognizing his alleged contribution to the Moses Mabhida stadium’s design highlights the often-overlooked talents of local individuals.

  10. If Mr. Nene design Mabida, he need to be paid for his contribution, we are tired if people Enriching themselves in the expense of others. It good EFF maje us aware of this.

  11. This has been happening in Africa. Patent rights have been stolen from Africans even in the US. Inventions by blacks have been suppressed. Now mysteriously the man in Greade 11 died. I strongly believe the matter must be taken on review. Thekweni municipal in that year must be investigated, even the death of the boy needs urgent criminal investigation. The family and the nation have to be informed

  12. What was he waiting for when the guy was alive? Start with the young gentleman from your home soil, Limpopo who designed the Merc. bakkie that made appalling sales due to a boy’s heart ache of crying for his design everyday. A lot of people who use X, killed that guy’s dreams of being a designer. Busy asking a matriculant about a patent….who attends a school in the village? then is supposedly assumed to know about patents. The department of Education should do better and add the problems affecting the society in the school syllabus; GBV, patents, sex education, unsolicited work, human rights.
