Father in the dock for alleged rape of his one-month-old baby

A 31-year-old man is expected in the Brits magistrate’s court in North West on Monday following the alleged rape of his one-month-old baby.

The suspect was caught in Krokedile Drift West on Thursday last week for the gruesome criminal offence.

According to reports, the infant’s 27-year-old mother was preparing food outside the couple’s shack while the suspect was sleeping inside with the baby next to him.

Father and child both undressed

Police spokesperson Captain Aafje Botma explained: “The mother suddenly heard the baby crying. When she entered the shack, she noticed that something was wrong, as the father of her child and the baby were both undressed.

“The amazed mother screamed for help and one of the neighbours responded and eventually called the police.”

The baby was taken to the hospital for medical examination.

Lieutenant-General Sello Kwena, police commissioner in North West, expressed shock and condemned the alleged rape in the strongest possible terms.

Kwena also applauded the police and members of the community for their swift reaction that led to the arrest of the suspect.

Crime statistics
During an announcement of crime statistics for the second quarter of 2023 recently, Police Minister Bheki Cele said many of the reported rape cases took place at the residence of the perpetrator or that of the victim, including residences known by the victims or the perpetrators.

He also said that some of these crimes are committed by family members against their relatives, friends and neighbours.

Cele called on communities to be allies against crime, adding that this cannot be understated.

“When it comes to the prevention and combating of GBVF [gender-based violence and femicide], it remains a betrayal of humanity to look away and ignore abuse and violence of anyone, let alone women, children and other vulnerable groups in society.

“It is our resolve to ensure that the perpetrators of violence against women, children and vulnerable groups are brought to book.”
