Fire causes over R2m damage to taxi rank and several vehicles

The police in Limpopo are searching for a group of men believed to be behind the burning of a taxi office building and vehicles at the weekend.

The building and vehicles in Kgapane, Polokwane were burnt to ashes after a group of men was spotted in the premises early on Saturday morning.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the damage to both the office building and taxis is worth more than R2-million.

Speaking to Sunday World on Monday, Ledwaba did not want to link the fire to ongoing taxi wars, saying the motive is not known and adding that a massive manhunt is under way.

“A 32-year-old security officer was on duty at the premises when he noticed the fire in the yard. He went to investigate and realised that the office building was on fire together with the vehicles parked in the yard,” said Ledwaba.

“The incident was immediately reported to the police and members of the emergency fire brigade who managed to extinguish the fire.

“The police have opened a case of malicious damage to property and are continuing with the investigations.

“Anyone with information that can assist the police with the apprehension of the unknown suspects is urged to contact the branch commander, Lieutenant-Colonel Marius Botha, on 082 469 2937 or go to a nearest police station.”
