The ANCWL in the Free State has expressed joy and jubilation that MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae has been given the opportunity to be the premier of the province.
This comes after Letsosa-Mathae, a treasurer-general of the ANCWL nationally, pipped the top job from the axed premier and provincial ANC chairperson, Mxolisi Dukwana.
The provincial women’s league commended the ANC for its continued commitment to women’s empowerment. Also for its support for women’s participation in leadership and decision-making positions.
“This is a testament to the organisation’s unwavering dedication to the struggle for gender equality and women’s liberation. In its 55th National Congress, the ANC resolved that organisational renewal will never be possible at the exclusion of women. … Particularly the women’s league of the ANC,” said ANCWL secretary Theodora Mosala.
Mosala stated that Letsoha-Mathae is a decorated leader who joined the ANC at a young age. She has been a stalwart member of the ANCWL since the early 1990s.
“Her dedication to the struggle for women’s empowerment and her passion for the advancement of women’s rights have earned her recognition and respect within the movement.
“We believe that comrade Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae will continue to build on her legacy. [She will] make a meaningful contribution to the advancement of women’s rights and interests in the province.
Inspire and empower women
“We are confident that her leadership will inspire and empower women. [It will empower them] to take an active role in shaping their own destiny. And contribute to the development of our province,” she said.
The new premier has served as MEC for Community Safety, Roads and Transport in the province. She served in this position since March last year under the leadership of Dukwana. Dukwana was sent packing after he failed the premiership interview on Monday.
