Two more people have died from cholera in Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, bringing the death toll to 17.
It was reported earlier this week that 15 people had died after consuming contaminated water over the weekend, including a three-year-old child.
The Gauteng Health Department says there are currently 67 patients in being treated in hospital with gastrointestinal infections.
The number of laboratory-confirmed cases of cholera is standing at 29.
The department is urging people to wash their hands with water and soap, or alcohol-based sanitiser before handling food and after using the toilet.
Hammanskraal residents have been urged not to drink tap water and instead drink water from tanks that have been provided in the area.
Investigations to identify the outbreak’s source are underway, and results are expected to be out today.
