A breakdown of COVID-19 cases released by the Gauteng government today shows that the sub-district comprising of Sandton, Alexandra, Wynberg, Orange Groove and Houghton (Johannesburg E) has the biggest number of infections, sitting at 227 positive cases of coronavirus.
Joburg has emerged as the epicentre of the virus, accounting for 712 cases of the province’s 1199 total number of infections. It is followed by Ekurhuleni with 257 cases, Tshwane 125, while Sedibeng has 11 cases and the West Rand has 40 people who have tested positive for the virus.
There have been seven deaths recorded in the province, the country’s economic heartland, while 781 people have recovered.
The provincial government has not yet given the sub-district breakdown of infections in Sedibeng, which has townships such as Evaton and Sharpeville. A breakdown of positive cases in places in the West Rand, which has townships including Kagiso, had also not been provided.
Gauteng premier David Makhura recently rolled out a testing and screening campaign in Alexandra – one of the country’s biggest and impoverished townships – after one man tested positive last month.
The sub-district (Johannesburg B) with the second-biggest number of confirmed coronavirus cases – 140 – has the suburbs of Randburg, Rosebank, Emmarentia, Greenside, Melville, Mayfair, Northcliff, Parktown and Parktown North.
The Joburg inner city and Joburg South have 93 cases of the virus, while the sub-district which comprises Diepsloot, Kya Sands, Dainfern, Midrand, Lanseria and Fourways has 70 cases.
Johannesburg G – which includes Orange Farm, Weilers Farm, Ennerdale, Lenasia, Eldorado Park and Protea South – has 50 cases of coronavirus.
Roodepoort, Constantia Kloof, Northgate, Florida, BraamFishersville – who constitute Johannesburg C – have 44 cases.
Doornkop, Soweto, Dobsonville, Protea Glen, which constitute Johannesburg D, have 39 cases.
In Ekurhuleni, the north part of the region (Kempton Park, Edenvale, Tembisa and Bapsfontein) has the highest number of COVID-19 cases, 105.
Ekurhuleni south, where you find big townships of Katlegong, Vosloorus and Thokoza, together with Alberton, Boksburg, Germiston, has 73 cases.
In the east of Ekurhuleni (Springs, Benoni, Brakpan, KwaThema, Tsakane, Daveyton and Wattville) there are 55 cases.
In the capital Tshwane, Hatfield, Brooklyn, Centurion, Silverton, Lyttelton, Rooihuiskraal, Olivenhoutbosch, Waterkllof, Eldoraigne (Tshwane 4) have 38 cases of COVID-19.
Tshwane 6 – which comprises Eesterus, Lethabong, Mamelodi, Silverlakes, Garsfontein, Lynnwood, Queenswood, Wilgers, Watloo, Equestria, Mooikloof and Brummeria – has 37 cases.
Ga-Rankuwa, Mabopane, Wainteveldt, Soshanguve, RosslynKarenpark, Wonderboom, Akasia, Nina Park, Orchards, Amandasig, Thereza Park, which make up Tshwane 1, have 23 cases.
In Tshwane 3 (Atteridgeville, Laudium, Pretoria CBD, Hercules, Danville, Saulsville, Lotus and Pretoria West) there are 15 positive cases of the virus.
Hammanskraal, Temba, Suurman, Dilopye, Stinkwater, Ramotse, New Eesterus, Kameeldrift, Pyramid/Rooiwal, Doornpoort, Kekana Gardens, KekanaStad, Marokolong, Rens Town Kanana – which fall under Tshwane 2 – have only 4 cases of Coronavirus recorded.
