Heavy rains, strong winds forecast for many parts of the country

The South African Weather Service has issued a warning about heavy rains and strong winds that are expected to hit many parts of the country this week.

Severe thunderstorms which might lead to gusting winds are expected in Gauteng, the northern parts of KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, North West and the Free State.

This as KwaZulu-Natal is picking up the pieces from the latest round of flooding in the past week.

The province’s department of cooperative governance and traditional affairs has warned residents about heavy rainfalls throughout Monday.

Joint operation activated

The department has, in the meantime, activated a joint operation in response to the severe weather conditions predicted.

The operation cluster includes all municipalities in the province, law-enforcement agencies and rescue teams.

Sboniso Mngadi, spokesperson for the department, said the residents around Drakensberg in Sani Pass can expect a cold front accompanied by light snow, stating that disaster management teams have been activated across the province.

“The KwaZulu-Natal department of cooperative governance and traditional affairs would like to warn the public about the rains that are expected in different parts of the province,” said Mngadi.

“According to the alerts that we have received from the South African Weather Service, our province will receive more rains in different parts and there’s also a cold front.”

The weather service also posted a weather update on its social media platform X.com.

Forecaster Dipuo Tawana said that heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected across Gauteng on Monday and Tuesday.
Thunderstorms forecast for Gauteng

“Cloudy and cold conditions are expected all over Gauteng today with the maximum for Pretoria at around 13 degrees celsius, Johannesburg maximum of 12, and Vereeniging reaching a maximum temperature of 11 degrees celsius,” said Tawana.

“We are expecting scattered showers and thundershowers over the province on and off throughout the day.

“Tomorrow [Tuesday], we are still expecting the same conditions to persist with on and off thundershowers and we are still expecting the cold temperature over the province.”
