Illegal mining has emerged as a severe social and economic menace, with dire consequences for infrastructure and public safety.
During his state of the city address on Thursday, Johannesburg mayor Kabelo Gwamanda highlighted the extensive damage caused by illicit mining operations. These include tunnelling under roadways and excavating bridge embankments. It’s also compromising vital water and sewage networks.
Such activities not only endanger residents but also worsen the deterioration of infrastructure. These pose a risk to further harm to the city’s stability, said Gwamanda.
Gwamanda underscored the significant financial toll of illegal mining on the municipality. He cited expenses related to repairing damaged infrastructure and restoring ravaged terrain.
According to the mayor, illegal mining has a significant and complex impact on the city’s financial situation.
“Though an exact total for the expenses associated with this issue has yet to be calculated on a municipal level. It encompasses various costs such as the repairs necessitated by damage to water or sewage systems. Replacing entire pipes that have been damaged beyond repair and restoring terrain ravaged through quarrying activities.”
Concern over gang warfare
He said the city’s response has involved vigilant monitoring and collaboration with law-enforcement agencies. Also proactive measures to mitigate risks and safeguard public safety.
Moreover, the mayor addressed the pressing issue of escalating crime. This is particularly in areas plagued by gang violence and drug-related activities.
He expressed deep concern over the brazenness of gang warfare and its devastating impact on communities. The mayor emphased the urgent need for comprehensive interventions. These are to stem the tide of violence and dismantle criminal networks.
To combat crime effectively, the city has deployed enhanced law-enforcement measures. This includes relaunch of the tactical response unit and the deployment of CCTV cameras in strategic locations.
These efforts aim to bolster public safety and restore confidence in the city’s security infrastructure, Gwamanda said. They are coupled with intensified collaboration among stakeholders.
Despite facing budget constraints and resource limitations, Gwamanda affirmed the city’s commitment to delivering quality services. This will also improve residents’ quality of life.
City is financially stable
The mayor highlighted achievements in providing basic services to informal settlements. He emphasised the importance of collective responsibility in securing the city’ future prosperity.
Gwamanda assured residents that the municipality remains financially stable and resolute in fulfilling its mandate. This is notwithstanding the challenges ahead.
“The city has rebased its budget as a prudent response to a strained revenue base. Also as a responsible action to ensure we deliver on our commitments. This while maintaining stringent fiscal discipline and governance.
“We are pleased to assure residents that their city remains financially stable. It is committed to delivering on its mandate and promises.”
