Jub Jub’s rape, attempted murder case postponed to February

The rape and attempted murder case against TV personality and rapper Molemo Maarohanye, affectionately known as “Jub Jub”, has been postponed to February.

Maarohanye, who also faces a charge of assault, briefly appeared in the Johannesburg magistrate’s court on Monday for trial proceedings.

The matter was postponed to allow for further investigations.

Speaking to the media outside the court, Maarohanye’s lawyer Terrence Baloyi said the defence team has requested further particulars, as “something is not adding up”.

Justice delayed is justice denied

The defence team, said Baloyi, has requested further particulars because it could not comprehend some of the charges levelled against Maarohanye, adding that he is hopeful the state would provide enough information.

“The main point of contention is that we had requested further particulars which were furnished this morning, as a result we do not know whether we have been provided with everything we requested. We need to consult,” he said.

“Justice delayed is justice denied, we’re being delayed but hopefully they have provided us with everything we need to proceed with the matter.”

Baloyi is confident that the charges against Maarohanye will not hold.

Commenting on his state of readiness for trial, he said if the charges had any basis, they would have been reported much earlier, emphasising that the defence is not shaken.

“If there is something so serious and your life is in danger, why wait for 10 years?”

The allegations

Maarohanye was released on R10 000 bail after he handed himself over to police in Brixton earlier in the year. This after a warrant for his arrest was issued.

Actress and TV personality Amanda Du-Pont opened a case of rape and attempted murder against Maarohanye, a decade after he allegedly violated her.

Du-Pont said the Ndikhokhele hitmaker allegedly raped her several times during their two-year relationship. She also accused him of attempting to kill her.

Shortly after the allegations circulated widely in the news, another personality, former Metro FM presenter Masechaba Khumalo, also revealed that Maarohanye allegedly raped her when she was 16 years old, saying the rapper broke her virginity.

Maarohanye has since denied the allegations, claiming that he is being framed for crimes he did not commit.

Jub Jub not a first-time offender

The Uyajola 9/9 presenter is no stranger to the courts of law.

In 2010, he was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for murder and attempted murder, among other cases.

The sentence followed an incident where four children were killed when Maarohanye bumped on them while allegedly racing under the influence of drugs.

Two other school children were killed.

His conviction was overturned in 2014 and the sentence was reduced to 10 years, however, he was released on parole in 2017 after serving only four years in jail.
