Lesotho national to spend decade in jail for killing his brother

A 40-year-old man from Lesotho will spend the next 10 years behind high prison walls after he was convicted of killing his brother.

The Bethal magistrate’s court in Mpumalanga found Johannes Phala guilty as charged for the murder of Joseph Phala.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Salvy Mohlala said Phala stabbed Joseph multiple times on August 28 2021. The stabbing took place during a family gathering at a farmhouse in Vaalbank outside Bethal.

“The two had an argument resulting in a physical squabble which led to Joseph’s murder committed by his own brother. Phala was arrested at his hiding place in Embalenhle shortly after the incident,” said Mohlala.

Handing down the sentence, the court also declared Phala unfit to possess a firearm.

The provincial commissioner of police in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant-General Semakaleng  Manamela, expressed concern about domestic-related violence where members of the same family turn against each other.
