A 38-year-old man from Morning Glory Farm district in Bethlehem, Free State has been arrested after he allegedly assaulted his wife to death at the weekend.

The suspect is expected to make his first court appearance on Tuesday to answer to a charge of murder.

The police in Bethlehem were dispatched to the crime scene after they received a call in the early hours of the morning on Sunday.

Upon arrival on the crime scene, the police found the body of a woman laying in the open field with blood on her face and wounded on the forehead, said Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring.

“She was wearing a black-and-white dress with brown tekkies and was certified dead by emergency medical services personnel.”

It is alleged that the 21-year-old woman was killed by her husband. The motive for the murder has not been established.

“Her name cannot be disclosed until her family is officially informed and [the woman] positively identified.”

Meanwhile, police in Ladybrand in the Free State have arrested a 52-year-old man after he allegedly raped and locked a 17-year-old girl in his house.

The teenager was later rescued by other farm dwellers.

It is alleged that on Sunday morning, the 17-year-old girl was at a friend’s place drinking. She went outside for a smoke and was approached by a 52 year-old man who lives in the same farm.

“It is alleged that he called her and went with her to his place where he raped her,” Mophiring said.

“He then locked her inside the house until the farm community came and broke down the door of the suspect’s house and set her free.

“She reported the rape to her mother who alerted the police. The police went with her to the farm where the suspect was found and arrested.”

The suspect is expected to appear before the Ladybrand magistrate’s court on Tuesday on a charge of rape.
