Marikana transport SMME launches road safety campaign

Mamoja Trading and Project – a small, micro, and medium enterprises (SMME) transport company – has launched its road safety campaign in Marikana, North West.

The road safety initiative aims to reduce the severity and frequency of truck accidents in the province.

This comes as the freight industry is experiencing the torching of trucks after about 20 trucks were set alight from Saturday last week to date.

Themed “Safety is a small investment for a rich future, hence it remains our priority”, the campaign will be an integral part of the company’s operations going forward.

Annah Ngxeketo, chief executive and co-founder of Mamoja, said most accidents are avoidable, noting that the company believes a lasting change in workplace attitudes and culture is necessary from everyone in the transport industry.

“In order to deliver the biggest possible impact, we need to ensure that our safe vehicles are driven by safe drivers on safe roads,” said Ngxeketo.

Ngxeketo further explained the significance of the campaign, saying the reason why road safety is important is because many lives and jobs are at stake.

“The Department of Transport and the Road Transport Management System have made great strides forward in safety awareness in recent years. The reason Mamoja came up with this initiative is because, as part of the industry, we bear witness to more truck accidents every year.”

Addressing the media in Pretoria on Wednesday, Police Minister Bheki Cele said the police had identified possible suspects, noting that the police are investigating.

On Friday, at least three people had been arrested for setting the trucks alight in KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Limpopo.
