Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille has announced that the board of SA Tourism will be dissolved come Friday.
The move follows the public outcry after SA Tourism announced its intended R1-billion sponsorship deal with UK soccer giants Tottenham Hotspur over a month ago.
In a statement on Wednesday, De Lille said she had written to former board chairperson, Thozamile Botha, at the beginning of April asking for representation on why she should not dissolve the board.
“My letter outlined a number of serious concerns such as the conduct of the board in respect of the Tottenham Hotspur sponsorship matter,” reads the statement.
“The composition of the board and whether the members have the necessary knowledge, experience or qualifications as required by section 13 of the Tourism Act.
“The serious allegations raised by acting CEO of SA Tourism regarding the lack of a proper functioning board.”
In her letter, De Lille had requested Botha to respond to her in writing by April 18. Last week, De Lille confirmed that Botha had resigned.
“I can confirm that eight of the 11 board members, including the chairperson, have resigned,” she said.
“The remaining three members of the board cannot form a quorum and the board is therefore no longer functional.”
