Murdered Fort Hare graduate to be buried on Friday

A 27-year-old University of Fort Hare graduate who was gang-raped and brutally killed by unknown men will be laid to rest on Friday.

The woman’s killers are still at large.

According to police, Nontokozo Mokae from Keiskamma-Hoek in Eastern Cape was attacked by men who sexually forced themselves on her and later killed her.

She was found laying helplessly by passersby outside her home last week and later died in hospital.

Mokae’s family said Nontokozo recently graduated and started working as a teacher, adding that the family is struggling to process the news.

Mokae’s uncle Zongezile Booi said attacks on women have become a daily occurrence across the country.

“We want to see nothing else but justice being done, we want the law to be tightened on these cases because it is not nice to see these happening on a daily basis,” said Booi.

It is alleged that Mokae was dropped off outside her home from a night out with friends on July 1. She was stabbed several times and bruised.

Mokae’s case follows the tragic murder of Nelson Mandela University’s student who was stabbed 17 times until she died by a male student at the campus residence.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said the 22-year-old suspect, Luyanda Mahlanza, has already made his first court appearance.

“Zimkhitha Ntshisela was a 20-year-old second-year student in tourism management and her boyfriend, Luyanda Mahlanza, was arrested and charged with murder,” said the NPA.

“The accused is expected to be back in court on July 6 for his bail application.”
