On Tuesday, Project 10 000 came to fruition with President Cyril Ramaphosa officiating the passing out parade of new police officers at the Tshwane SAPS Academy.
The ceremony, which continues until Wednesday, has seen the first 2 938 newly trained police officers taking an oath to hit the ground running. A total of 9 248 are graduating.
Police Minister Bheki Cele said the department has heeded the presidential call during the State of the Nation Address in February to bolster the capacity of the SA Police Service.
“These new constables have successfully completed the longer and more intensive nine-month basic police development learning programme,” said Cele.
“All the trainees were orientated on the SAPS in general, and taken through the SAPS code of conduct covering professional and ethical conduct. Officers at the community service centres should provide victim-centred services, especially to women, children and the most vulnerable in society.”
Deputy Minister of Police Cassel Mathale and national police commissioner General Fannie Masemola also attended the parade.
