North West mining tycoon due in court for alleged assault

A fleet of luxury cars linked to North West businessman Solly “MySol” Madibela have been stationed outside the Mmakau police station since his detention two days ago.

The mining tycoon is due in the Brits magistrate’s court on Thursday for allegedly assaulting a miner and allegedly cleaning out his bank account of R55 000 a week ago.

Four cars including a Jeep Wrangler and two BMWs with tinted windows set camp outside the police station on Tuesday and Wednesday.

This while Madibela and his personal protectors await their bail hearing for charges that include assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, among others.

North West police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said Madibela and four accomplices were arrested on Tuesday after a criminal case was opened last week.

“We can confirm that five suspects aged between 32 and 42 were arrested in connection with the case in question,” said Mokgwabone.

“They are expected to appear before the Brits magistrate’s court soon on charges of assault, attempted murder, robbery, and malicious damage to property.”

Mokgwabone added that an investigation is continuing.

The group allegedly assaulted a miner and his accomplices during a confrontation over a mining spot.

“Mysol and his eight personal bodyguards and 10 spacemen [personal employees] assaulted seven men on September 14 in the presence of Mooinooi police officers,” a source told Sunday World at the time.

“One man who was assaulted is urinating blood [in hospital] because he was badly assaulted when pepper spray was used on his face.”

After the alleged assault, the group took the miner to Madibela’s offices at Samancor mine where the tycoon’s employees threatened him with a firearm.

They later forced him to open his bank app and transferred R55 000 to their personal account.

Madibela, who is known for his over-the-top lifestyle, is the owner of Mysol Holdings, a mining company based in North West.

The businessman owns a fleet of luxury vehicles that include a Bentley and a Maserati. He also owns a private jet.
