Police operation busts suspects behind jobs scam in Gauteng

Wheels have come off a recruitment scam after Gauteng police nabbed three suspects believed to be key in defrauding unsuspecting job seekers.

The suspects were cornered in their offices in Douglasdale in Sandton, northern Johannesburg this week by members of the Gauteng commercial crime investigation unit.

They face charges of fraud and are expected to appear in court soon.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo said: “The police received information about an alleged recruitment scam. It is reported that the suspects would advertise job vacancies at various companies for different positions.

“The applicants would be requested to pay a certain amount for police clearance and administration. Police investigations have revealed that all the information provided by the suspects was false.”

Gauteng police are pleading with anyone who might have fallen victim to the scam to contact Colonel Asogan Naidoo from the commercial crime investigation unit.

“People must always verify with relevant government departments if the recruitment agency is registered and legitimate before they can give money to such agencies,” said Masondo.
