Putco cites high fuel, operational costs as reasons to hike fares

State-subsidised commuter bus company Putco intends to increase annual fares from January 2023, the company said, noting that the decision was necessitated by operational costs, rising fuel prices and high interest rates.

Putco spokesperson Lindokuhle Xulu said the company is mandated by the provisions in its extended contract which allows for the annual fare increase.

“Putco has over the past few months consulted with passenger forums on its intention to increase the fares and these notices are part of that process,” said Xulu.

“The forums are formal structures elected by passengers through a process facilitated by the Gauteng department of roads and transport.

“We have been engaging with commuter forums on this matter and the consultations will continue over the next two months. We hope our passengers will accept the increase, as it will help Putco provide an improved service.”

He said the forums continue to raise concerns through regular meetings held with the company and in the presence of officials from the department.

Despite the bus company experiencing a turbulent year with its drivers embarking on a strike in September, which led to the axing of 105 workers, Xulu said management is hopeful for the new year.

“Putco continues to find ways to weather the challenges faced over the past year. We are optimistic that 2023 will be a better year for our commuters. Putco has also introduced new buses to its fleet to improve the service as requested. The total number of new buses will be over 140.

“We are doing our best to ensure that we get more new buses on the road. We are also implementing technological means to get our commuters traveling more conveniently.”
