Rand Water slams DA over unscheduled visit to its head office

Rand Water has refuted claims made by the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng that the Chief Executive of Rand Water, Sipho Mosai, would not engage with them.

Following DA Gauteng Provincial Leader Solly Msimang’s visit to the Rand Water offices, the party issued a statement calling for Mosai to be removed from his position.

They alleged that Mosai is incapable and that under his leadership, the entity’s infrastructure has collapsed.

“He has not ensured that residents’ water supply is adequately managed. Water is a human right and he has failed on this mandate,” read the statement.

On Wednesday, Rand Water issued a statement and said the DA Gauteng’s visit to Rand Water headquarters was unscheduled.

Rand Water spokesperson Makenosi Maroo said Rand Water is not interested or involved in politics and is a professional organisation.

“Amongst many inaccuracies contained in the DA media statement, the statement claims that the Chief Executive of Rand Water, Sipho Mosai, would not engage with them … and drove right pass them.

“The CEO of Rand Water was not at head office when the DA entourage led by Mr Solly Msimang arrived unannounced at the Rand Water head office,” said Maroo.

Maroo further said they operate within the boundaries of relevant legislation and regulatory frameworks and the entity uphold the highest standards of transparency and accountability in all its operations.

Maroo said the DA needs to follow the legislative and regulatory framework governing oversight visits as prescribed by legislatures.

“We, therefore, request the DA to work with us in most municipalities under their leadership to resolve the infrastructure issues that are faced by these municipalities to ensure that the infrastructure is maintained.

“Water leaks are repaired to prevent water losses so that the water that is provided by Rand Water to these municipalities reaches the citizens rather than being lost before it reaches the citizens,” Maroo added.
