South Africa observes International day against drugs

The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, or World Drug Day, is observed annually on June 26.

The day aims to raise awareness about the illegal use of drugs, trafficking, and associated problems.

This year will be observed under the theme People first: stop stigma and discrimination, strengthen prevention.

This day is recognised to highlight the health challenges related to drug abuse and trafficking, and encourage combating measures such as prevention, education, treatment, and rehabilitation.

Understanding the underlying causes of drug usage and promoting evidence-based approaches to drug prevention and treatment are two of the main objectives of celebrating this day.

The government’s Justice, Crime prevention and security cluster has vowed to work with communities to ensure a safe and drug-free environment.

Government has furthermore made a plea on communities to join hands in this campaign.

“We urge parents and community structures to play a role in raising awareness and provide support to those affected by drug and alcohol abuse,” the government agency said in a statement.

Communities who battle with drug and alcohol addiction issues were encouraged to reach out for help by contacting the department of social development’s substance abuse helpline and South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA).
