State wants ‘Sizok’thola’ crew members charged with Khumalo

The state wants former ‘Sizok’thola’ presenter Xolani Khumalo, who is accused of murdering alleged drug dealer Robert “Kicks” Varrie in July 2023, to also face the music.

It was revealed in court that more suspects linked to the murder should be arrested.

Khumalo, whose contract was terminated by Moja Love TV last November, appeared before the Palm Ridge magistrate’s court on Thursday. He is on trial for murder, robbery, and malicious damage to property. This following the death of 49-year-old Congolese national who was assaulted during a botched drug-busting operation.

According to the state prosecutor, Albert Dwera, Varrie was assaulted in July 2023 in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni. He died after he was rushed to hospital.

Additional suspects sought

Dwera told the court that the state needs time to identify additional suspects and consult with witnesses.

“The state needs to know who was operating the cameras, because those people should also be charged in this matter.

“One of the witnesses is here in court. However, the state needs to do a consultation with the other two witnesses,” said Dwera.

The matter was postponed to July 3 for further investigation.

Varrie was declared dead after the alleged assault while being interrogated during the filming of ‘Sizok’thola’, an anti-drugs campaign series that aired on Moja Love TV on Sundays.

Fans gathered to support suspect

Outside the courtroom, Khumalo, who is out on R20,000 bail, gave a wave of gratitude to those who supported him.

“Your support means a lot to me; it shows I’m not alone. I wish you could do the same when one of us is facing challenges,” Khumalo said.

A handful of fans vowed to continue giving him their unwavering support.

A family member of Varrie, who asked not to be named, said she was delighted to see progress in the case.

“We are happy that more people will be arrested. Because we have been saying Khumalo was not alone when Robert was allegedly assaulted and killed.

“We want justice for our brother who was brutally killed,” she said.
