Thembekwayo in court to retrieve his car from pawn shop

Internationally revered motivational speaker Vusi Thembekwayo has gone to court to force a Johannesburg pawn company to hand over his luxury BMW X6M Sport.

The R2.8-million vehicle was allegedly sold to the pawn shop by a motor mechanic for R40,000 after Thembekwayo’s ex-wife, Palesa Mahlolo, failed to pay for its repairs.

Thembekwayo has filed papers in the Pretoria High Court to force the company, Blue Chip Debt Collectors and Asset Recovery and High End Fordsburg Storage, which is based in Booysens, southern Johannesburg, to hand over the car to him.

In the court papers that Sunday World has seen, Thembekwayo is pleading with the court to grant him an injunction ordering the pawnshop to allow him to enter its premises and retrieve his Beemer.

Alternatively, the court should authorise and direct the sheriff or his lawful deputy to attach and remove the road monster from the pawn shop on his behalf.

He also pleads with the court to order “the respondents to pay the costs of this application on an attorney and client scale…”

Thembekwayo confirmed to Sunday World that he was involved in a dispute with the pawn shop over the vehicle, and the matter is currently in court.

Thembekwayo said he bought the vehicle for Mahlolo as transportation for her and their children after their separation.

Thembekwayo said he discovered that his former wife was no longer in possession of the vehicle when he landed in the country from his gig across the pond about two years ago.

Thembekwayo said he hired a private investigator to establish what happened to the car.

“I then received information that my ex-partner was involved in a minor accident after purchasing diesel to fuel the generator during loadshedding.

“The diesel spilt in the car and apparently caused some mechanical and electrical damage to the vehicle,” he said.

He said she then took the car to a motor mechanic in Booysens for repairs. The mechanic sent a bill of R40 000 to Mahlolo, who failed to pay.

“The mechanic then sold the debt to these guys who run a pawn shop for R40 000,” Thembekwayo said.

He said he told the investigator to ask the shop owners to send him the invoice with details of the items they fixed on the vehicle but they failed to do so.

“I questioned the round-up figure of R40 000 because normally a bill like that would not contain a round-up figure,” he said.

Thembekwayo said during several email exchanges, the pawn shop owners told him that actually the bill had ballooned from R40,000 to R250,000 after they included a storage fee.

He said as they continued to argue about the bill, they then changed again and said actually the bill has skyrocketed from R250 000 to R350 000.

Thembekwayo said they insisted that he should pay the staggering amount if he wanted his car back.

“I then reached out to my lawyers, who requested that I transfer the funds to their trust account and instruct these individuals to retrieve the money from them.

“I followed their advice and sent the money to my lawyers, who then contacted the guys and instructed them to claim it from them. We then decided to take the matter to court, and that’s where we are currently at.

Thembekwayo said he learnt many people have complained about the owners of the pawn shop.

Sunday World’s attempt to elicit comment from the Blue Chip Debt Collectors and Asset Recovery and High End Fordsburg Storage owners was unsuccessful, as the security officers guarding the premises denied us entry.

Matter of Fact:

In the article published on October 13, under the headline, “Thembekwayo in court to retrieve his car from pawn shop”, we stated that Pawn Car 4 Cash bought the debt from the motor mechanic who repaired the BMW X6 the businessman bought for his ex-wife, Palesa Mahlobo.

This after she failed to pay for the vehicle’s repairs. Pawn Car 4 Cash wrote to us and said, although it shares the same address with the company or companies that bought the debt, it was not involved in the dispute. The companies involved in a legal dispute with Thembekwayo were Blue Chip Debt Collectors and Asset Recovery and High End Fordsburg Storage. Sunday World regrets the error and apologises to Pawn Car4 Cash for the embarrassment and inconvenience the article may have caused.

This article has been updated to reflect the correct names of the companies involved in the dispute with Thembekwayo.

  2. One has to question how did the mechanic pawn the car without proof that it belongs to him?

I do understand his frustration though..

  3. It’s broad daylight robbery shame. They pounce in black people most of the time especially around Booysens, very synonymous with the game.

  4. I’m sure these pawn shop owners and the mechanic are foreign nationals. They take advantage of South African people because we’re stupid, as they claim so. If I was him I’d go to any taxi rank and ask for help🤣🤣🤣

  5. Are South Africans that Stupid. Why are foreigners always to blame. Boysens is mostly indian and coloured people . Stop blaming foreigners for everything as if South Africans are all perfect.

  6. The moment they refuse to hand it back, they’ll tell him thestorage fee has skyrocketed from R350K to R450K.

Exi should have humbled herself and asked for help from him though.
