Three Diepsloot leaders expected in court for public violence

Dozens of Diepsloot residents have gathered outside the magistrate’s court in Randburg where community leaders are expected to appear on Monday.

The community leaders, who face charges of public violence, were nabbed during a protest in the area on Thursday last week.

At the centre of the community protest is escalating crime believed to be committed by undocumented foreigners in the area.

Tension rose on Thursday following a memorial service for slain community policing forum chairperson John Makola on Tuesday. The residents were also angered by President Cyril Ramaphosa’s delayed visit to the area.

They are demanding that Ramaphosa should come to Diepsloot and provide a solution to their grievances, including crime combating.

On Friday, community leaders decided to suspend all engagements with authorities until the three leaders are released from custody.
