Four months after the fatal shooting of Sibusiso Mpo Zikalala, a Johannesburg metro police member, the accused was arrested and later released on bail.
Twenty-eight-year-old Constable Bongimpilo Nzuzu Bengu was arrested by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) on Tuesday morning.
He appeared in the Johannesburg magistrate’s court on the same day and was released on R5 000 bail with conditions attached to his freedom.
The matter was postponed to January 25 for further investigations.
Ipid spokesperson Robbie Raburabu confirmed that Bengu’s arrest came after a long and thorough investigation.
According to reports, Bengu shot and killed Zikalala in front of his wife outside a club in Braamfontein, Johannesburg in the early hours of June 26.
Before the shooting, it is alleged that a heated altercation had ensued between the deceased and Bengu.
In a video that went viral and caused social media stir, Zikalala can be seen approaching Bengu’s car screaming: “Take the gun out and shoot, take it out,” before the gun went off.
In the video, Zikalala waves his gun, threatens to assault Bengu who is seated in his vehicle before being pulled out of the car.
Numerous gunshots follow and Zikalala is seen falling to the ground, hit.
“On Tuesday, a team of Ipid investigators arrested Constable Bongimpilo Bengu for the murder that happened outside a club in Braamfontein in the early hours of 26 June, where Mpo Zikalala was shot and killed in front of his wife.” said Raburabu.
Zikalala was buried in a semi-military funeral in July in Dobsonville, Soweto, where his colleagues and law-enforcement officers paid their last respects in song and ululation.
