Traffic officer accused of killing girlfriend remains in custody

A 34-year-old Limpopo traffic officer accused of killing his girlfriend will spend the next 10 days in jail following the postponement of his bail application.

Kabelo Duba appeared in the Polokwane magistrate’s court on Monday where the matter was postponed to September 15.

He made his first appearance at the Lebowakgomo magistrate’s court on August 28 following his arrest at his homestead in Penina Park four days earlier.

This after the discovery of the body of a woman identified as 26-year-old Kedidimetse Moche, a student at Tshwane University of Technology Polokwane campus.

Moche’s body was found dumped under the bridge along the R37 in Lebowakgomo on August 17. The motive for her murder remains unknown and police are investigating.

During Duba’s arrest, police recovered an unlicensed firearm, ammunition, and some exhibits. He faces charges of unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition, theft of deceased’s cellphone, and defeating the ends of justice.

The murder case follows hot on the heels of another gruesome killing in KwaZulu-Natal involving a law-enforcement officer.

Sergeant Mbuyiseni Gema appeared in court late in August for the murder of Busisiwe Ngubo, who was pregnant with the officer’s triplets.

Sunday World reported previously that Ngubo was found dead on the side of the road in eHlanzeni. It is believed that she was killed a day before she was to give birth to triplets.

According to quarterly crime statistics released by Police Minister Bheki Cele in May, at least 70 murders are committed in South Africa every day.

Cele announced at the time that more than 6 200 people were killed between January and March 2023.

The murders of women across the country showed an increase of 71 compared with the same period in 2022, while there was a decrease of 19.6% in child murders.
