Tremor of 3.5 magnitude hits parts of Gauteng

Johannesburg – The South African Council for Geoscience has confirmed that a quake was felt in Westonaria, approximately 51km southwest of Johannesburg on Tuesday morning.

The tremor was recorded at 6:33 am.

According to the council the tremor registered a 3.5 on the local magnitude scale as recorded by the SA Seismograph Network.

The Council’s Dr. Eldridge Kgaswane says the latest earthquake was likely related to nearby mining activity.

“It is rational to say that it could be mining related. It’s not clear as to what type of mining activity could have caused this if it is mining-related,” he said.
