Western Cape teen who assaulted his helpless granny arrested

The police in the Western Cape have arrested a 19-year-old man for allegedly assaulting his grandmother.

National police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said the young man is expected to appear in court soon.

“SAPS [SA Police Service] in the Western Cape have arrested a 19-year-old suspect who is seen in this video assaulting his grandmother,” Mathe said.

“The suspect was traced to Wallecedene in Kraaifontein on Wednesday evening. He is expected to appear before the Blue Downs magistrate’s court on a charge of assault.”

R100k reward

On Thursday morning, a one-minute-long video of the man who was seen physically assaulting an elderly woman started making the rounds on social media.

The man can be seen pushing the woman violently, who tips a pot on the stove, which sends hot porridge flying from the stove to the floor.

The lady also falls and is seen trying to pick up the hot porridge with her hands while the man stands over her, making violent hand gestures and assaulting her.

It is understood that the man is Luluvo Ngqaza and the woman is said to be his grandmother. The pair stays together at their home in Kraaifontein.

The arrest came after businessman and philanthropist Malcom X offered a R100 000 reward for the young man’s arrest.

Malcolm X claimed that he had no relationship with the elderly woman but found the man’s actions repulsive.

Speaking to Sunday World on Thursday, Malcolm X said he believes the video was taken on Wednesday at the elderly woman’s home.

Lack of evidence

“According to social media groups, it has been going on for more than two years but has never been reported, as there were denials from the perpetrator and there was no evidence until now,” he said.

“I feel numb but not defeated, as I know that it is my responsibility as a responsible citizen to get the perpetrator arrested and convicted.”

Malcolm X said he put out a R100 000 reward for anyone who could help with the man’s arrest.

“Even though I am not related to the old lady, I wish the perpetrator got arrested, denied bail, convicted, and sent to prison for many years without parole.

“I am neither related to the old lady nor the perpetrator, and I hope she is feeling better.”

According to information obtained from social media users close to the woman, she was admitted to the hospital and treated for a minor injury following the incident.
