The Young Communist League of South Africa (YCLSA) in Govan Mbeki has expressed disappointment in Netball South Africa president Cecilia Molokwane.
They have accused Molokwane of allegedly ignoring the instructions set by President Cyril Ramaphosa to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, a deadly virus that continues to result in deaths.
Molokwane revealed her positive status for Covid-19 after her business trip to United Kingdom and Scotland, holding meetings in preparation for the Netball World Cup scheduled to be held in Cape Town in 2023.
“After the first recorded case of the virus in the country, there was a call that all who travelled abroad should self-quarantine until their test results are made available so as to reduce the risk of spreading the deadly virus,” reads part of the statement.
They claimed that Molokwane ignored the self-isolation as she had been screened at the airport but not tested.
“She was seen all over crisscrossing after her return to the country, attended a Netball Tournament in PEPPS as well as in Seshego where she was in contact with learners.
“She has now revealed to having thus prompting panic amongst many in the province,” reads the statement.
They added that the virus was mostly brought into the country by people who have access to medical aids and private healthcare and urged everyone to follow instructions by Ramaphosa to ensure that the virus does not spread further.
“This includes the poorest of the poor, who live from hand to mouth and squalor with some who find it difficult to access basic services.
“This irresponsible action and behavior denotes ignorance behavior by those who have at the detriment of the have nots,” reads the statement in part.
However, after Molokwane revealed her status on Tuesday, she said she was in quarantine.
“I would like to take a moment to alert the general public that I am currently in quarantine and taking all the necessary precautions to make sure that I recover fully from the virus.
“I am not showing any symptoms however I will still take precautions to protect everyone around me and myself,” she said.
