The coalition government between the ANC, DA, IFP, Good and PA is in full swing after the ANC secured enough signatories for its formation.
This, after the ANC’s failure to secure majority votes, forced the organisation to cooperate with other parties on an agenda that would transform the country.
The five-party coalition government, dubbed the government of national unity, has caused a tremendous shift in South African politics, calling an end to the ANC dominance era.
This means President Cyril Ramaphosa, as appointed during the National Assembly of the 7th Administration on Friday, will consult with the leaders of GNU parties before making decisions.
More parties being pursued
In a statement, ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri, announced that the parties that have officiated their participation in the GNU represent 273 seats, and more parties are still being pursued, including those that have shown no interest in the GNU.
“This collaborative initiative is founded on core principles, including upholding the constitution and rule of law, promoting non-racialism and non-sexism, and ensuring social justice, redress, equity, and poverty alleviation,” said Bhengu-Motsiri.
“Our aim is to foster nation-building, social cohesion, and unity in diversity while maintaining peace, stability, and safe communities. Ensuring accountability, transparency, and community participation in governance is paramount,” she added.
Coalition government priorities aligned with ANC policies
She said the priorities and minimum programme of this newly formed government were aligned with the commitments and policies of the ANC.
This includes, among other things, improving infrastructure, creating jobs, improving food security, and bettering the South African economy.
“It’s essential to dispel any misconceptions regarding the opposition’s ability to outmanoeuvre the ANC’s vision. Historically, our party has demonstrated superior reasoning and leadership, evident in our continued presence in eight out of nine provinces.
“The GNU, an ANC-led initiative, ensures that no single party, whether the DA, IFP, or others, can hold our national agenda hostage,” said Bhengu-Motsiri.
She also explained that this would be an inclusive government, allowing various sectors to forge a social impact to tackle challenges that are still faced in the country.
“Together, with unity and shared purpose, we will navigate challenges and build a stronger, more prosperous nation for all. Let us do more, together,” she said.
