Mzwandile Masina has resigned as ANC councillor in the City of Ekurhuleni after allegations that he defied the party on its new coalition with the EFF.
Masina, who voluntarily resigned after a meeting with the party’s leadership in the province, is under fire for going against the instruction to withdraw a motion of no confidence against DA’s Tania Campbell in October.
In a statement on Thursday, the ANC’s provincial working committee (PWC) said the former mayor of Ekurhuleni will face a disciplinary hearing. He is also expected to offer a public apology for his transgression.
The statement reads: “The provincial working committee of the African National Congress met on Monday, November 21 2022, to carry out day-to-day programmes, activities and instructions of the provincial executive committee and conduct the ongoing political and organisational work of the ANC.
“The provincial working committee received a report from the officials of the ANC in the province, who met with the regional chairperson of the ANC in Ekurhuleni, comrade Mzwandile Masina, regarding what transpired at the Ekurhuleni metropolitan council meeting earlier this month.
“The officials provided a report that comrade Mzwandile Masina will offer a public apology to members of the ANC and also that he has voluntarily decided to resign as a councillor representing the ANC in the Ekurhuleni council.”
Masina was expected to make a comeback for a second term as mayor after Campbell was ousted, however, he withdrew from the race, paving way for Nkululeko Dunga from the EFF.
His withdrawal came after the ANC had resolved to support the EFF in Ekurhuleni in exchange for the red berets’ support in the ruling party’s next mission to oust Mpho Phalatse as the mayor of Johannesburg.
Confirming his withdrawal, Masina said he wanted to focus on other opportunities. “No, unfortunately, I’ve served my five-year term. When I attempted a second term, I was defeated, so it’s time to focus on other issues in the movement,” Masina said at the time.
He was the ANC caucus leader in the City of Ekurhuleni and served as mayor from 2016 to 2021. The ANC applauded him for his remarkable work.
“The PWC wishes comrade Mzwandile well on his endeavours and thanks him for leading one of the most stable, innovative and well-run municipality for the past five years as mayor. The City of Ekurhuleni, under the stewardship and exemplary leadership of comrade Mzwandile Masina and his collective, was a model for good governance.”
