The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) backs the appointment of former SA Students Congress (Sasco) member Tembani Zimasa Makata to the National Assembly.
In a statement on Friday, the league conveyed its and unwavering commitment to advocating for increased youth representation in parliament, stating that Makata’s deployment aligns with its call for a 50% youth representation in both the parliament and the broader government structure.
The move is viewed as crucial in ensuring that the voices and aspirations of South Africa’s youth are adequately represented at the highest levels of governance.
“Comrade Makata’s elevation to this crucial role underscores our collective resolve to empower and engage the youth in shaping the future of our beloved country,” said the ANCYL.
The league views Makata’s path to parliament as evidence of the strength of youth activism, cohesion, and the unwavering commitment of emerging leaders within the liberation movement.
The ANCYL said: “We trust that she will continue to champion the cause of youth, fight for social justice, and contribute to the realisation of a more equitable South Africa.”
Her elevation to this significant role underscores the collective determination to empower and involve the youth in shaping South Africa’s future.

The youth organisation commends Makata’s induction into parliament as a recognition of her exceptional leadership and commitment.
Makata previously held the position of secretary-general for Sasco.
Her involvement in the struggles of the Progressive Youth Alliance has unquestionably equipped her for this momentous responsibility, the league said.
“Comrade Makata is a distinguished comrade, renowned for her dynamic leadership as the former secretary-general of Sasco.
“Her tenure at Sasco was marked by dedication to the ideals of justice, equality, and opportunity for the youth of our nation.
“Her deep-rooted involvement in the Progressive Youth Alliance struggles has prepared her well for this momentous responsibility,” said the ANCYL.
