Maphorisa back in court for allegedly assaulting lover Phongolo

Mnike hitmaker and award-winning producer Maphorisa will on Wednesday find out whether or not the court will drop assault charges laid against him.

Maphorisa, born Sonnyboy Sekowe, was arrested and held overnight at the Sandton police station in May after he allegedly assaulted his actress girlfriend Thuli Phongolo during an argument.

He has already made two court appearances at the Randburg magistrate’s court in May and June. The matter was postponed for the acclaimed DJ to make represantations to have the case withdrawn.

This after Phongolo told the court in May that she wishes to withdraw the statement she deposed at the police station when she opened the case.

In the statement, Phongolo said she had an argument with the Ba Straata hitmaker after she confronted him about an argument at a gig the night before.

She said in the statement: “I confronted him so that we can talk about our argument, which happened the previous night during his gig.”

The actress, who was accompanied by her road manager when she opened the case, said Maphorisa responded aggressively and started slapping her. “He held me, took me to the balcony, and grabbed me aggressively by my neck,” she said.

Maphorisa, who is also known as Phori, is out on R4 000 bail.

In a joint statement released by the two, who were dating at the time of the incident, they said they have resorted to resolving their issues privately.

“The matter has received mixed public attention, causing great emotional stress. It is on this basis that the parties have elected to resolve this matter privately through their respective management and legal teams,” they said in a statement released on their social media pages.

“Consequently, Phongolo has since withdrawn the charges against Sekowe.”

They added that they want to return to their respective fields of work after the now-concluded private resolution of the matter.

“Neither of the parties has any intention to allow this private matter to impact their respective or the other party’s brand and professional interests. They request the public to give them the time and space to return to their work unhindered.”
