Sizok’thola presenter Xolani Khumalo was granted R20 000 bail at the Palm Ridge magistrate’s court on Tuesday. The state did not oppose his bail. He will return to court on October 19.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said even though the prosecution believes it has a strong case against him, it did not oppose bail.
Khumalo is facing a charge of murder. He handed himself over at the Katlehong North police station on Tuesday morning.
In a statement released by his foundation, The Xolani Khumalo Foundation, the Moja Love presenter said he was advised to hand himself over to the police.
“The South African Police Service has requested that Xolani Khumalo hand himself over in connection with an incident that occurred at one of the last drug busts. Xolani Khumalo and the team operated according to the strictest standards of professionalism when engaged in securing accountability from those that sell drugs and choose to harm communities,” the statement read.
Khumalo shared the experience on his social media page when he handed himself to the police.
Moja Love spokesperson Nonzwakazi Cekete confirmed that the channel was informed that Khumalo would be handing himself over to the police on Tuesday morning.
“We are aware that he is handing himself to the police and the matter is sub-judice and we will await the outcome of the court,” Cekete said.
In July, the presenter was accused of being at the centre of the death of an alleged drug dealer, Robert Varrie. Widely known as “Kicks”, Varrie died shortly after a visit from Khumalo and his television crew who were filming an episode of Sizok’thola.
