BSA apologises to Zulu king for failed tournament

Boxing South Africa (BSA) could take action against the promoters of the botched boxing extravaganza that included retired boxing icon Floyd “Money” Mayweather and Zulu King Misuzulu.

BSA, which has launched an investigation into the matter, has also tendered an apology to King Misuzulu for the embarrassment caused.

The joy4joy Tournament, which was initially pencilled for last Sunday, was postponed twice, but never materialised.

In a radio interview on MetroFM, Mayweather’s camp distanced themselves from the shenanigans that ensued throughout. The camp claimed no money was paid to them by the organiser, Arnold “Squire” Nododile.

It is also alleged that the sanctioning fees were not paid and the number of bouts had been reduced from six to three. To make matters worse, some boxers found out on their way to the venue that the tournament had been called off and that some of the overseas fighters didn’t have return tickets.

“BSA as the regulator of professional boxing in the country hereby wishes to tender an apology to the Zulu King, the boxing fraternity as a whole and to members of the public at large who may have been negatively affected by the actions of the Joy4Joy boxing promotions.

“BSA emphasises that it is the primary responsibility of promoters to stage quality and entertaining tournaments. This means among others that the promoter must comply with the regulatory framework of Boxing SA, particularly the boxing regulations,” reads BSA’s statement. “In the current matter, Boxing SA gave the promoter ample opportunity to comply with regulations but the promoter failed to comply, leaving Boxing SA with no option but to cancel the tournament.”
