Mngqithi responds to Hunt’s criticism

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi says that his SuperSport United counterpart Gavin Hunt has no business in saying that the Brazilians’ domination and spending power is weakening the PSL.

Mngqithi says that Hunt had the same financial muscle when he bought good players and won the PSL league title with Bidvest Wits in 2016/17.

Last week, Hunt said Sundowns were streets ahead of other clubs in the league and that it was difficult to compete against them because of their deep pockets.

Sundowns are continuing with their spending spree and the latest player to come on board at Chloorkop was Morocco defender Abdelmounaim Boutouil.

The Brazilians have also raided PSL clubs, more especially SuperSport where they snatched Ronwen Williams and Sipho Mbule in the off-season.

“I would have the same question to coach Gavin and ask him when he was at Wits and they were signing so many players and he won the league, were they killing the league? Because the truth of the matter is, if you were to check that season when Wits won the league, Gavin signed a lot of quality players and he did very well and that for me was very positive,” said Mngqithi.

“To say Sundowns must walk and win every match because they are signing quality players, I think this thing has been happening for all these years. Sundowns has always signed quality players throughout the years, even before I was here, even before the current president and Motsepe family owned this club. The Zola Mahobes, the others before him were always signing quality players.”

Mngqithi said that clubs must improve their coaching and their scouting and they can improve their teams.

“I don’t think it’s always about money you can spend to build a team. Stellenbosch FC are doing extremely well with the resources that they have. It’s about spending well and getting good players. There are teams really doing a lot of good work and they will become a force in South African football soon. They are focussing on what is working for them. You can get a lot of good players that can challenge any other team in the league by having a very good eye for spotting talent and to look exactly at what you want for your team.”
