Arthur Zwane still hopeful of a Chiefs top-two finish

The hope of finishing second in the DStv Premiership and playing Caf Champions League football next season is still very much alive, according to Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane.

Amakhosi boosted their chances of a top-two finish when they edged past strugglers Chippa United 1-0 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Thursday.

After the match, Zwane said his side has not lost hope and still banging on the door for the Champions League spot.

“Football is very unpredictable, we fancy our chances [of finishing second], we will always fancy our chances,” Zwane said.

“Chiefs is a big team. We play to win every game, and anything can happen in football.

“We’ll keep on pushing, it doesn’t matter how we’re going to end the season, the key right now is to collect maximum points in every game that we play.”

Despite the league already long gone and the trophy already engraved Mamelodi Sundowns’ name onto it, Zwane still believes that people would be speaking a different story and possibly challenging for the league title had his troops been clinical in front of goal.

“It’s the nature of the game [missing chances], I don’t think there is any player that will want to go into the field and miss chances deliberately.

“They try their level best, and, on another day, they will get it right and score more than two, three or even four goals, and it’s coming.

“The only thing we can do as the technical team is to keep on believing and encouraging them to do the right thing. This has been our disease, the story of our season, missing chances.

“It could have been a different story in terms of when you look at the log, if we took maybe half our chances that we create, but I can’t faulter the players efforts, they did everything right, apart from that missing link of being clinical in front of goals. But we will keep on trying our level best on improving on that aspect.”
