Kaizer Chiefs’ topsy-turvy start to the seasons continues unabated after they registered another 1-0 loss at home against Cape Town City at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday night.
In their last four league matches, Amakhosi drew 0-0 with Royal AM, lost 1-0 to SuperSport United, defeated Sekhukhune United 2-1 and then lost to City last night.
Chiefs started the match on position six and they have now dropped down to seventh while City leapfrogs from number nine to fifth position on the DStv Premiership.
It was an evenly-matched first half with both sides not really stamping their authority, besides creating a number of decent scoring opportunities.
Chiefs skipper Itumeleng Khune made a return to the side and played his 365th match for Amakhosi. He had a couple of saves to make and showed some glimpses of his old self.
As expected Ashley Du Preez and Christian Saile used their incredible speed on both sides of the flank and had the Capetonians back-peddling for most of the opening period. In the 18th minute, Pule Mmodi troubled the City defenders with his speed but Darren Keet was equal to the task.
As the clock ticked towards the half-time break, both sides tried to sneak in a goal. Like when City’s Khanyiso Mayo rose majestically and connected to a dangerous square ball from Thami Mkhize.
On the other side of the of the field, Christian Saile also misses the target with a glancing header from a pin-point cross from Edson Castillo on the right.
By the half-time break, the stats were favoured Chiefs with six attacks on goal and three on target while the visitors had four attempts with a single strike on target.
After the break, both teams continued where they left off in the first, teasing each other and launching sporadic attacks.
Keanu Cupido was lucky when he was given a yellow card instead of a straight red, following a studs high, dangerous tackle on Castillo.
And after asking a lot of questions, City was finally rewarded when Mayo’s bullet header beat Khune hands to make the score 1-0 in the 58th minute.
This was after some persistent and hard work from Darwin Gonzales on the left, who shrugged off a challenge from Saile and sent a sweet cross to Mayo who thanked him with a goal. It was the deadly striker’s fourth goal of the season.
The handful of supporters who bothered to attended, were sent into a state of shock as the goal came against the run of play.
They then spurred the home side forward and cheered for their team, but their players are still blowing hot and cold.
Chiefs pressed and pushed for the winner and Njabulo Ngcobo’s diving header was brilliantly saved by Keet.
Substitute Keegan Dolly added oomph into the Chiefs’ attack, and he had a couple of sniffs at goal but was unfortunate not to get an equalizer.
