Foster sidelined as he gets help for mental health

English Premiership club Burnley FC have announced that their striker Lyle Foster has been given time off to attend and to consult with specialists in his quest to overcome his troubles with mental health.

Recently, the Bafana Bafana number one striker has been missing in action for his struggling club, without explanation, and that has raised eyebrows. Foster has not been ashamed to talk about his battles and he spoke about his situation in a Bafana camp earlier this year and about how he almost called it quits, before his family intervened and turned the situation around.

Reads the statement from Burnley: “On behalf of Lyle Foster and his family they have asked us to share with you an update on Lyle’s illness. Lyle let us know that he continues to live with issues around his mental well-being and has reached out for help.

“He is currently in the care of specialists – giving him the support and care he needs to help him back to full health. With the love and support of his family and everyone at Burnley Football Club we will do all we can to provide everything he needs to get better.

“We ask for your understanding and respect Lyle’s privacy around this matter and will not be making any more comment until further notice.”

Foster arrived in the Premiership with a bang, scoring three goals for the Clarets after the team was promoted from the Championship to the elite league this season. So, it will be interesting whether Bafana coach Hugo Broos will include the striker in his squad for the upcoming Fifa 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Benin and Rwanda later this month.
