The police and the City of Polokwane municipality are anticipated to implement strict security measures to safeguard the large number of spectators, while local businesses and street vendors are anxious to make extra money during tonight’s Betway Premiership match between Magesi FC and Mamelodi Sundowns.
For Magesi, the purpose of hosting the match at the 15 000-capacity Seshego Stadium is to empower local businesses, street vendors, and guest houses, enabling them to partake in the excitement of this beautiful game.
“We are fully aware that Seshego Stadium has a small capacity, and hosting a big club like Mamelodi Sundowns might not sound good,” said Magesi’s media liaison officer, Abel Rakoma.
“As a club based in a village, we have a duty to empower our people by taking some of these big matches closer to them so that they can benefit without travelling to Polokwane.
“As you may know, most fans without their own cars need to take two taxis to reach Peter Mokaba Stadium from Seshego, Moletji, and the surrounding areas; they first travel to town before catching another taxi to the stadium.
“Playing Sundowns in their backyard in a night match like this will save our fans and street vendors enough time, distance, and transport fares, while our local businesses will also benefit a lot.”
Mantlako Sebaka, the manager of sports and recreation for Polokwane municipality, stated that they are well aware of the importance of this game and the arrangements that must be made.
“Although this presents a significant challenge for the municipality, we will ensure that proper safety, security, and traffic flow are provided,” said Mantlako.
Safety and security guaranteed
Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, the provincial commissioner of police, has reaffirmed that security measures are in place to guarantee the safety and security of football players, spectators, and other stakeholders at Sehego Stadium.
The police will be strategically placed to uphold law and order, working with a variety of role players.
It is recommended that all attendees and the general public follow the established security procedures and report any suspicious activity to the police.
Magesi have yet to win a game this season and are currently in 12th place following two draws.
On August 9, they drew 1-1 at home to Stellenbosch before playing to a goalless draw away to Polokwane City on August 13.
In contrast, Sundowns are still undefeated after two games.
They defeated AmaZulu 2-0 in their first game on August 9 but were held to a 1-1 draw by Chippa United at home on August 11.
Masandawana have five points and are ranked fifth on the log.
