Kaizer Chiefs winless streak and frustrations for their supporters continues after they were handed another defeat, their third this season, by SuperSport United at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Wednesday night.
SuperSport did just enough to hold on to the three points at stake. The game was played in front of an enthusiastic and passionate crowd and the match lived up to its expectations.
The supporters had not even cleared their voices when United ambushed Chiefs and caught them napping as early as the second minute when Terrence Dzvukamanja unleashed a sublime volley that left Itumeleng Khune seeing stars.
Khune, Amakhosi’s longest serving player, was making a comeback into the side after being on the sidelines for some time and he had not touched the ball when it kissed the back of the net from Dzvukamanja’s rocket to make it 1-0.
Khune’s first feel of the ball was picking it up from inside the net but he was to make amends later in the match when he pulled a couple of saves to keep Amakhosi in the game.
Dzvukamanja was on a mission to kill Chiefs and he sneaked in a header from a corner kick but Khune was alert and equal to the task with a fine save.
On the opposite side of the field, Chiefs were launching dangerous attacks and ‘daddy long-legs’ Jasond Gonzales and Ashley du Preez had a couple of sniffs at goal, but they were always a few yards short from connecting with the ball and rolling it into the net.
The introduction of Pule Mmodi for Christian Saile in the second half brought more possession and spark into Chiefs’ play that was flat and lacked penetration in the first stanza.
They started knitting together dangerous passes and dissecting the United defence, who were defending desperately. Gonzales had another chance from an awkward angle and he ballooned his shot into the crowd.
Khune almost gifted Keenan Bezuidenhout an easy goal after a hesitant clearance. The youngster slipped as he was about to chip the ball over Khune’s head and there was relief on the veteran keeper after the miss.
Amakhosi pressed forward for the equaliser but the home side held on to their lead.
