Kaizer Chiefs have registered their first DStv Premiership win of the season against AmaZulu, courtesy of a Pule Mmodi brace and Edson Castillo goal at the FNB Stadium on Saturday night.
Amakhosi beat Usuthu 3-0 as they turned things around with a much-needed win for the under-pressure coach Molefi Ntseki.
It took four minutes for Amakhosi to break the deadlock, with Mmodi pouncing on a follow up and finding the back of the net after Tebogo Potsane’s shot was saved by goalkeeper Veli Mothwa, but the ball fell on his path.
The Glamour Boys kept on frustrating the visitors and things got heated on the touchline between Ethan Brooks and Mduduzi Mdantsane, but the technical teams managed to separate the two.
Brooks was close to getting an equaliser for the visitors when he fired a shot from the edge of the box after a well-worked corner, but his effort went a whisker away off the post at the stroke of half-time and went into the break trailing a goal down.
AmaZulu came out with more intent, as they tried to get back into the game, with Wayde Jooste coming close but his effort did not trouble shot stopper Brandon Peterson.
Ntseki’s side absorbed the pressure and got the second goal of the game through Mmodi, who scored with a tap-in from an exquisite back-heel pass from Potsane – as the new signings paired up once again.
Venezuelan international Castillo put the game to bed in the 86th minute when he scored the third goal of the match – his second in Chiefs colours after converting an easy header from a throw in and move up the table.
Amakhosi will now look to build up from this performance as they will take a long trip to the Winelands against Stellenbosch FC on Wednesday.
