Up-and-coming local coaches enrol for CAF B Diploma course

South Africa’s respected and up-and-coming coaches have enrolled in a Confederation of African Football (CAF) coaching course to beef up their coaching abilities and qualifications.

The likes of Morgan Mammila, Aaron “Mbazo” Mokoena, Khabo Zondo, Vusimuzi Vilakazi, Thabo Mngomeni, McDonald Makhubedu, Thabo September, Wayne Vilakazi, Khabonina Zondo, Papi Zothwane, Joseph “Duku Duku” Makhyanya, Tlou Segolela, and Kurt Leintjies are among some of the coaches who have registered for the CAF B Diploma licence.

The courses are currently being rolled out at Germiston Stadium in Ekurhuleni, east of Johannesburg.

What is to their advantage is that they have either played at the highest level in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) or they have held coaching stints in the local professional leagues.

Twenty-five coaches have started the process of obtaining their coaching badges, and SA Football Association (Safa) Ekurhuleni is in charge of the course.

First phase

According to the Safa website, the first phase started on April 29 and will round off on May 5. The coaches are expected to finish the course after three phases in July.

CAF instructor Steve Coetzee highlighted the topics for the first phase and spoke about the diversity within the group that is undertaking the CAF B Diploma course.

“We are very happy to be conducting a CAF B Diploma course after so many years,” said Coetzee.

“I know many coaches have been calling for these courses, and we are proud to be able to deliver both the A and B diplomas in 2024.

“We will be working on the following topics this week, and we believe that the coaches will leave this phase with a lot of knowledge that they should start implementing within their various areas.”

Key areas of interest

The 10 key areas that will be covered during the course are: philosophy of football; technical development; evolution of systems; tactical development; psychology; laws of the game; player development; reading the game; coaching methodology; nutrition and injuries.

Coetzee said: “We are very happy with the mix of coaches present here; you have coaches in the PSL, Motsepe Foundation Championship, the Hollywoodbets Super League, and the various national teams, which is wonderful for group projects because we will have so many different perspectives of the game, from coaching at the elite, semi-professional level, and international levels.

“We are looking forward to a great session and wish all the coaches the best in attaining this diploma.”
