Vilakazi tips his son to do even better than him

Former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana legend Benedict “Tso” Vilakazi is of the opinion that his son Thato Mohlamme can surpass him if he gets given a fair opportunity.

Mohlamme, 25, is Vilakazi’s eldest son and is currently in the books of DStv Premiership side Richards Bay FC.

He joined the Natal Rich Boyz at the beginning of last season from Uthongathi FC.

Despite the pacey and skilful forward not getting a lot of minutes in the PSL top flight, Vilakazi says he knows what his son can do and is confident that
Mohlamme can surpass him.

“I had time to develop him. I was coaching one of the academies between 2014 and 2015 in Randburg, ETS [Education Through Soccer], and he was there to play as a young boy,” Vilakazi told Sunday World recently.

“I know his qualities. I know what he can do and what he cannot do. It’s up to the coach to say what he thinks he can do.

“But one thing I’m sure about is that if you give him that opportunity, you’ll see something. There’s something good about him. He just needs that opportunity and time.”

Ahead of what is expected to be an exciting and possibly big season for Mohlamme with Richards Bay having secured a multimillion-rand sponsor from Phakwe Gas, Vilakazi has advised his son to work hard and forget about emulating him.

“I also remind him that he is not me; there’s no way he is going to be me. I want him to be himself – go out there and show his talent and skill.

“He must just forget about me. I’ve played [my part], so if he is going to want to be like me, then it means we’re not going to see the potential that he has got,” said Vilakazi.

  1. Tso is not Pirates legend, he left Pirates for Sundowns. How can a Sundowns and Swallows player suddenly become a Pirates legend. Just asking….
